Dan Curtis Welch

Events

Dan Curtis Welch, 84, passed from this life on July 7, 2019. He was born on December 2, 1934 to Arthur George Welch and Ann Curtis Welch in Miami, Arizona. His father worked as a human resources agent for Miami Copper. His mother was a homemaker.

Dan was a member of the football, basketball, and baseball teams during his high school years at Miami High School along with being in the Navy JROTC. He was honorably discharged on March 2, 1956 when he was inducted into the US Air Force. He served four years during which his tour sent him to Bitberg, Germany where he was a radio operator. After he was honorably discharged with the rank of Airman First Class, he attended Arizona State College in Tempe, Arizona. He had several interesting occupations including being an aircraft engineer at AirResearch where he helped develop the onboard starter for jet engines. He was a consultant for Rolls Royce, owned and operated an 80-acre farm, and then purchased a water well truck to start his own repair business. He expanded his repair service to a wholesale pump distribution business. Not having enough to do, he decided to purchase the local hardware store in Buckeye, Arizona and successfully expanded it into a hometown icon.

He was an avid sports fan attending all his children and grandchildren's events. He supported all the local schools: Buckeye Elementary School District, Liberty Elementary School District and both Buckeye Union High School and Estrella Foothills High School. He extended his love of sports by playing golf at least three times per week and as a member of a bowling league.

He was a member of the American Legion, the Buckeye Elks club, Arizona Classic Thunderbird Club, Charlies' Angels, and the Pinewood Country Club in Munds Park.

Dan is survived by his wife of 59 years Margaret Doskocil Welch, five children Arthur (Melody) Welch, Robert (Dana) Welch, Michael (Michelle) Welch, Helen (Alan) Lueck, Wyatt (Michelle) Welch; sister, Catherine Welch Meibert; eleven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will take place on Monday, July 15, 2019 at 10:00 am at St. Henry Catholic Church 24750 W Lower Buckeye Rd, Buckeye, AZ 85326. Lunch will be served afterwards at the Elks Lodge 109 N 5th St, Buckeye, AZ 85326. Donations can be sent to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Dan will be in all of our hearts and memories forever. The trip I remember was going to Roosevelt Lake at night on the switch backs towing the boat, and it was the night of the tarantulas. They were all over the place, and we squished right over them. We had such a great weekend. I would get to spend the night when they lived in Mesa and ride the horses, just added to my love of horses. Marge take a second for yourself and know that he is smiling down on you.

Marge and family, so sorry that Dan has gone from this earth. I will always remember him as a kind generous man. He set the example for businessman, husband, father and friend. Always someone that George and I enjoyed spending time with. A great example when it came to sportsmanship. Something that’s in short supply these days. A gentleman in the presence of women and children. We both are thankful we knew him and were able to call Dan and Marge our lifelong friends. He will be missed. I know he is somewhere driving a beautiful car with his hair all shiny and crisp ironed shirt and Levi’s. He is smiling because he knows what an amazing family he raised and that someday Marge wil...l be riding by his side. Love Cindy and George HunterRead more

When my husband was first getting his construction business going in 2004, he had been in the hardware store many times, and finally decided he needed to open an account. So he went in to fill out the paperwork and wait for what is normally a long process, but Mr. Welch said "Give me a minute." And he came back in just a few minutes and said "the account is open" Chris said "no paperwork? How'd you do that?" Mr. Welch said "I own the joint". And from then on he always waited on Chris and helped him find what he needed and showed him how to use it. Chris has always appreciated his kindness and attention and will miss him.

I remember going to aunt Margie’s and Uncle Dan’s house for holidays and Uncle Dan would show off his cars. He didn’t always say a lot but he always hugged me goodbye when we left. I’ll miss seeing him.

Marge and family, Dan was such a gentle giant, incredible husband, Dad, Grand Dad, Great Grand Dad, and friend to so many. We are all going to miss him so much. A couple of memories: I remember babysitting their first born, Arthur, when they lived in a small Apt., I think it was their first time out since Arthur was born. Marge and Dan took me water skiing at Lake Mohave (?). And we camped for the night. They also took me for my 21st Birthday drink at Wagon Wheel Bowling Lanes in Phx, afterwards they brought me home to a party that was already in full swing, guess this wasn't my first drink, lol. They won lots of ribbons for their classy Classic cars in several cities in AZ. Dan also loved ...bowling and Golf, he was such a busy hard working guy. Vi Doskocil, his Mother-in-Law will miss him so much, her favorite things to bring when visiting was her deviled eggs, and his favorite bottle of "spirits". Dan will be missed by all of us. A huge loss indeed. I love you Welch's !Read more
